Lake Hillier

Lake Hillier is a saline lake on Middle Island in the Recherche Archipelago off the south coast of Western Australia, renowned for its striking pink colour. The lake lies within a nature reserve and is one of the best-known pink lakes globally.

The most notable visitor experience is aerial or boat viewing of the vivid pink water contrasted with the island’s vegetation and nearby ocean; the lake itself is relatively small, roughly 600 metres across, and landings are restricted to protect the reserve. Scientific interest focuses on the halophilic microorganisms that create the pink hue.

The lake was recorded by European explorers in the early 19th century and placed on charts during that period. It sits amid coastal dunes and native scrub on Middle Island and forms part of the broader Recherche Archipelago protected area.

Middle Island and Lake Hillier lie off the coast of Esperance in southern Western Australia and are reached only by private boat or scenic flights from the mainland; the area is managed for conservation and low-impact visitation.
