Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre is a large endorheic salt lake in northern South Australia, known for its episodic flooding and broad salt flats. It is the continent’s largest internal drainage basin and can transform from a dry playa to a shallow inland sea after heavy regional rains.

During major flood events the lake fills to varying depths and becomes an important breeding ground for waterbirds. In dry periods it forms extensive salt pans and clay flats that are traversed by specialized vehicles and used for scientific study and photography.

The lake was named by European explorers in the 19th century and carries an Aboriginal (Arabana) name in parallel; pastoral use and limited tourism have coexisted with conservation research focused on the basin’s episodic ecology.

Geographically it sits in the arid interior of South Australia, several hundred kilometres north of Adelaide, with the nearest service towns some distance away and access commonly via long outback roads.

  • Hydrology: The lake is ephemeral - some years it is a dry salt pan, while in exceptional flood years it fills to form Australia's largest lake surface and attracts waterbirds.
  • Lowest point: The lowest natural point in Australia lies within the lake basin, roughly 15 metres below sea level, and the area is remote with limited services.

What to See #

  • South basin (Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre South): The larger southern basin, often referred to as the main Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, is the region's lowest natural point and becomes a shallow inland sea in major floods.
  • North basin (Lake Eyre North): A smaller northern basin that fills less frequently and is part of the wider endorheic lake system within the Lake Eyre Basin.

How to Get to Lake Eyre #

Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre (Lake Eyre) is in remote South Australia and is normally reached from the north via the outback town of Marree. From Adelaide, drive north on the A1 (Sturt Highway) then connect to roads toward Marree - the sealed drive to Marree is roughly 650-750 km from Adelaide depending on route and is a long outback journey. From Marree you must continue on unsealed 4WD tracks to the lake shores; vehicle suitability, road conditions and permits vary so check local authorities.

Alternatively, seasonal scenic flights and charter flights from Adelaide or regional airstrips provide direct aerial access to the lake when available; guided tours from Marree or William Creek are common for visitors.

Tips for Visiting Lake Eyre #

  • The lake is most spectacular from the air when it contains water-book a scenic flight from Marree or scenic flights that operate from Adelaide for the best perspective on the salt patterns and inland flooding.
  • If you plan to travel by road, time a visit to cooler months and check access with local Outback operators; many roads are seasonal and deep salt flats and clay pans become impassable after rain.
  • Visit outside peak summer heat and target mornings for light and visibility; photographers and birdwatchers will find the best conditions soon after sunrise when flooding-when it occurs-concentrates wildlife.

Best Time to Visit Lake Eyre #

Timing depends on what you want: visit after regional rains (often late summer-autumn) to see water and birds, or in the dry season (Apr-Sep) for accessible salt‑pan landscapes.

Dry season (salt pan exposed)
Apr-Sep · 10-25°C
The lake is often a dry salt pan-good for 4WD access and seeing the vast empty basin; cooler nights and clearer skies.
Flood potential (best for seeing water)
Jan-May (variable) · 20-35°C
Following heavy inland rains the lake can fill unpredictably-this is when birdlife and boatable conditions occur, but timing is irregular and depends on seasonal rainfall.
Hot season
Oct-Mar · 25-40°C
Hotter months increase evaporation and dust when the lake is dry; conditions can be harsh for travel.
