Lake Como
Lake Scenic Italian lake known for villas and towns
Northern Italy’s Lake Como attracts visitors for lakeside villas (Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta), ferry hops between Como, Bellagio and Varenna, alpine foothills, and restaurants serving freshwater fish and risotto.
Lake Como is a glacial lake in Lombardy, northern Italy, known for its distinctive inverted Y shape and scenic shoreline. The lake covers about 146 square kilometres and reaches depths of roughly 400 metres.
The lakeshore is lined with historic towns, villas and gardens; principal towns include Como, Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio. A frequent ferry and boat service links these towns and is the most convenient way to travel the lake’s three branches.
Grand villas and landscaped gardens are major attractions, with examples such as Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta open to visitors. The lake also supports watersports, walking along lakeside promenades and scenic drives along the narrow roads that connect small villages.
Lake Como is a glacial basin in the foothills of the Alps, lying about 50 kilometres north of Milan and bordered by the provinces of Como and Lecco in Lombardy.
- Ferry network: A regular ferry network links lakeside towns and is the most practical way to travel between Como, Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio.
- Proximity to Milan: The lake sits about 50 kilometres north of Milan and is a popular day-trip and weekend destination from the city.
What to See #
- Como: A city at the southwestern tip of the lake known for its cathedral and a funicular to the hillside village of Brunate.
- Bellagio: A village on the central promontory where the lake's two southern branches meet, famous for lake views and gardens.
- Varenna: A lakeside village on the eastern shore with a ferry and rail connection to the regional rail network.
- Villa del Balbianello: An historic villa on the Lenno peninsula with terraced gardens and a popular waterfront access point for visitors.
- Villa Carlotta: A large villa and botanic garden on the Tremezzo shore open to the public for its gardens and art collections.
How to Get to Lake Como #
Lake Como is in Lombardy north of Milan. By train take Trenitalia/Trenord services from Milano Centrale to Como S. Giovanni (the station is a ~5-10 minute walk from the lakefront) or to other lakeside towns such as Varenna (via Lecco). By car drive north from Milan on the A9 motorway toward Como - the lake is roughly 45-60 km north of Milan depending on which town you aim for.
Tips for Visiting Lake Como #
- Start early (before day-trip ferries and coaches arrive) or aim for late afternoon to enjoy quieter promenades and better light on the villas - Como town and Bellagio get intensely busy mid-day. Use the ferry network and consider arriving via Varenna or Bellagio rather than Como town to experience less-crowded lakeside streets and to shorten walking between sights; ferries also let you hop between smaller towns that many visitors skip. Visit Brunate by funicular from Como for sweeping views of the lake that most day-trippers miss, or take a short detour to Nesso or Tremezzo for quieter villa gardens. If you want to avoid cruise-boat and coach crowds, stay overnight on the lake rather than attempting a single-day loop.
Best Time to Visit Lake Como #
Best visited in spring or early autumn for mild weather, open villas, and smaller crowds.
