Lake Bracciano
Lake Volcanic lake northwest of Rome supplying drinking water
Lake Bracciano northwest of Rome occupies a volcanic basin; towns such as Bracciano offer Castello Odescalchi, sailing and lakeshore beaches, with strict measures to protect the drinking-water supply.
Lake Bracciano is a volcanic lake in the Lazio region of Italy, located about 30 km northwest of central Rome and covering roughly 57 square kilometres. It is one of the larger lakes in the vicinity of Rome and an important local freshwater reservoir.
The lake is ringed by the towns of Bracciano, Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano, each offering waterfront promenades, marinas and restaurants. The shoreline is largely undeveloped compared with other Italian lakes, and the castle in Bracciano provides panoramic views across the water.
The basin is volcanic in origin - it occupies an ancient volcanic crater - and lakeside settlements developed in the medieval period. The stone fortress at Bracciano dates to the late medieval and Renaissance era and dominates the town. In modern times the lake has been managed to protect water quality, with restrictions on petrol-powered boating.
The lake sits in a low-lying volcanic plain in northern Lazio, framed by wooded hills and agricultural land. Rome is the nearest major city, and the lake is accessible by road from the SS2 and regional routes that link the three main lakeside towns.
- Water protection: The lake supplies drinking water for parts of the metropolitan Rome area, and private use of petrol-powered motorboats is restricted to protect water quality.
- Best viewpoints: The shoreline is dotted with small towns and promenades; the best viewpoints are from the castle ramparts in Bracciano and the lakeside roads between the three main towns.
What to See #
- Bracciano (town and castle): Sits on the northern shore of the lake in a medieval town dominated by a large 15th-century fortress that is open to visitors and hosts cultural events.
- Anguillara Sabazia: A small lakeside town on the lake's eastern shore with beaches, boat access points and waterfront restaurants.
- Trevignano Romano: A quieter town on the southern shore known for its panoramic views across the water and small marinas.
How to Get to Lake Bracciano #
Lake Bracciano lies northwest of Rome and is readily reached by road or regional train. By car take the Via Cassia (SS2) north out of Rome toward Bracciano; the drive is roughly 35-40 km depending on your start point in the city.
Regional Trenitalia services run from Rome to Bracciano station; from the station it is about a 10-20 minute walk (around 1 km) to the lakeshore and town of Bracciano. Local buses and taxis link surrounding villages and lakeside sites.
Tips for Visiting Lake Bracciano #
- Visit on weekday mornings or evenings to avoid Rome day-trippers; Bracciano and nearby towns are busiest on summer weekends.
- Take the regional train from Rome to Bracciano or Anguillara to avoid limited lakeside parking and to arrive directly into town centers for easy access to lakeside promenades.
- Be aware the lake is managed for water quality and navigation is restricted-public ferries and electric boats are the usual ways to explore the shoreline rather than petrol-powered craft.
- Don't miss Castello Odescalchi in Bracciano town-the castle overlooks the lake and provides a short, rewarding cultural stop that many visitors pair with a lakeside walk.
Best Time to Visit Lake Bracciano #
Visit in late spring through early autumn (May-September) for the warmest weather and the best lakeside activity options.
