Lake Scenic glacial lake in Triglav National Park
Inside Triglav National Park, Lake Bohinj is Slovenia’s largest natural lake; visitors swim, kayak and cycle around its shore, using the lake as a base for hikes into nearby alpine ridges.
Lake Bohinj is a natural glacial lake in the Municipality of Bohinj in northwestern Slovenia and the largest permanent lake entirely within the country, with a surface area of about 3.18 square kilometres. It lies inside Triglav National Park and is a centre for outdoor activities.
The lake features clear glacial waters, alpine shorelines and nearby mountain peaks, and is used for kayaking, swimming in summer, fishing and as a starting point for hikes and mountain routes. Visitors often combine a lake visit with short excursions to nearby waterfalls and mountain huts.
The lake formed from glacial processes and has been a local recreational and cultural resource for centuries; infrastructure around the shores includes small villages, boat services and footpaths.

How to Get to Lake Bohinj #
Lake Bohinj (in the Bohinj Valley) is reached by road or public bus from Ljubljana and Bled. By car it’s about 75-85 km from Ljubljana and typically a 1-1.25 hour drive; from Bled it’s roughly a 20-30 minute drive along the local road into Bohinj. Tips for Visiting Lake Bohinj #
- Best time: visit at first light when the lake is glassy and reflections of the surrounding peaks are clearest; late spring and early autumn offer good light and fewer tourists.
- Which entrance/gateway: Ribčev Laz serves as the main access point with the most services; the Ukanc end is the practical starting point for the short walk to Savica waterfall.
- What most people miss: take the short path to Savica waterfall from Ukanc and consider the Vogel cable car (from the Bohinj valley area) for a rapid gain in elevation and panoramic views over the lake and surrounding Julian Alps.
- Avoiding crowds: walk the full lakeshore early or late in the day-day-trippers concentrate around the eastern access and the parking area, so timing avoids most of them.
