Lake Biel

Lake Biel (Bielersee) is a freshwater lake in western Switzerland, lying at the foot of the Jura mountains and forming part of the Three-Lakes region. It is situated in a bilingual area where German and French coexist.

The lake offers boating, sailing and waterside recreation and is bordered by vineyards and small towns that are popular for day trips. Cycling and walking routes along the shore provide scenic access to towns and viewpoints.

Historically the lake has supported local fishing, transport and viticulture on its shores; the surrounding plain is an agricultural and wine-producing area. Over time infrastructure for navigation and flood control has shaped modern shorelines and harbours.

The lake sits between the Jura range and the Swiss plateau, with the city of Biel/Bienne on the northeastern shore and other small towns along the southern and western edges. It is accessible from Bern and other regional centres by road and rail.
