Lake Barrea
Lake Reservoir in Abruzzo within a national park
High in Abruzzo, Lago di Barrea fills a mountain valley inside Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise. Visitors come for hiking around the shore, small-boat fishing, and to stay in the hilltop village of Barrea with its stone houses and lakeside trails.
Lake Barrea is an artificial reservoir on the Sangro river in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. The lake sits within the boundaries of the Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise and is closely associated with the small towns that line its shore.
The shoreline and surrounding parkland provide hiking, wildlife viewing and scenic drives; small villages such as Villetta Barrea lie on or near the lakeshore. Water levels and shoreline character reflect reservoir management rather than a static natural shoreline.
The body of water was formed by damming the Sangro river to create a reservoir for water management and local uses. The valley and reservoir have been integrated into regional recreational routes and park trails over the 20th century.
Lake Barrea sits in the central Apennines of Abruzzo, in the province of L’Aquila, among steep wooded slopes and mountain roads; the nearest settlements are small park towns along the shore.
- Protected area: Lies inside Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, giving the lake immediate access to protected mountain landscapes and wildlife.
