Lake Annecy
Lake Alpine lake noted for clear water and scenery
Lake Annecy sits beneath alpine peaks with clear water, a lakeside cycle path and the medieval town close by; visitors swim, sail and explore the old town’s canals and markets.
Lake Annecy is an Alpine lake in southeastern France in the Haute-Savoie department, immediately south of the city of Annecy. The lake covers roughly 27.5 square kilometres, stretches about 14 kilometres in length and reaches maximum depths in the order of 80 metres.
The town of Annecy at the lake’s northern end features canals, historic streets and a lakeside promenade used as primary visitor access. Around the lake a paved cycling and walking route of roughly 40 kilometres gives continuous access to beaches, picnic areas and small harbours; the lake is a major local centre for swimming, sailing and non-motorised boating.
Water quality has been a focus of local management for decades and the lake is notable for its clarity compared with many urban and lowland lakes. Mountain views from the shore and from nearby elevated viewpoints frame the lake within the surrounding Prealps and massif slopes.
Lake Annecy sits at the foot of the French Alps in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, with the city of Annecy immediately to its north and a ring of small towns and villages around its shores.

Annecy station is served by TER regional trains from Geneva and Lyon; from Gare d’Annecy it is an easy 10-15 minute walk (about 800-1,200 m) down to the lakefront and old town. Local SIBRA buses and seasonal boat shuttles also serve lakeside stops.
Tips for Visiting Lake Annecy #
- Aim for early morning or late afternoon in high season: the water is calm for reflections, light is best for photos, and central Annecy is far less crowded before mid-morning.
- To explore more than the town, use the 40 km cycle path around the lake (start from Annecy or Doussard) - cycling sections early in the day avoids the busiest bathing spots.
- Skip the busiest Pâquier lakeside lawns at midday by visiting quieter villages on the east and south shores such as Talloires and Menthon-Saint-Bernard for scenic viewpoints and quieter cafés.
- Take the short drive or bus up to the Col de la Forclaz viewpoint (paragliding launch area) or the terrace of Château de Menthon for panoramic views that many day-trippers miss.
