Lake Albano (Lago Albano) is a volcanic crater lake in the Alban Hills southeast of Rome in the Lazio region of Italy. The lake occupies a deep, circular crater and is known for its clear water and steep wooded slopes.
The shoreline is lined by small towns and viewpoints; the town of Castel Gandolfo and the papal palace overlook the lake from terraces on the southwestern shore. Recreational activities include lakeside walking, boating and seasonal events on the water.
The crater formed as a result of volcanic activity in the Alban Hills; over historical time the area developed into a series of towns and estates, with the papal summer residence established in Castel Gandolfo in later centuries. Lake Albano hosted rowing events during the 1960 Rome Olympic Games.
The lake lies roughly 25 kilometres southeast of central Rome, set within a ring of volcanic hills and dominated visually by the town of Castel Gandolfo on its shore.
- Olympic legacy: The lake was used as the rowing venue for the 1960 Rome Olympic Games, and the surrounding roads are popular for walks and lake-view drives.
