The basin formed through volcanic and tectonic processes characteristic of the Central Andes; it has long been part of indigenous altiplano landscapes and is now protected for its ecological and scenic values.
Located in northern Chile’s Antofagasta Region on the Altiplano plateau, the lagoon is southeast of the town of San Pedro de Atacama and lies near the Miscanti and Miñiques volcanic complex.
