Lagrasse Abbey

Lagrasse Abbey is a medieval Benedictine abbey located in the village of Lagrasse in the Aude department of southern France. The complex combines Romanesque and later medieval fabric and forms the historic core of the small village.

The cloister and the abbey church, whose masonry and layout illustrate the site’s medieval monastic character; the abbey buildings are integrated with Lagrasse’s compact streets and bridges. Visitors typically view the cloister, the church interior, and the immediate monastic precinct when touring the village.

A religious community established a monastery on this site in the early medieval period and the complex was rebuilt and expanded in the Romanesque period. Over centuries the abbey has undergone repairs and alterations typical of long-occupied ecclesiastical sites, and parts of the complex were adapted for new uses while retaining medieval features.

The abbey stands on the banks of the small Orbieu valley within the village of Lagrasse in Occitania, southern France. It lies in a rural river valley surrounded by vineyards and low hills; Carcassonne is the nearest major city in the department.
