Lago di Tovel
Lake Alpine lake in Trentino, formerly known for red waters
Tovel in Trentino is a mountain lake with a well-marked trail system; hikers circle the shore and use the lake as a base for Brenta Dolomites routes.
Lago di Tovel is an alpine lake in Val di Tovel in Trentino, northern Italy, set within mountain terrain and protected natural areas. It became widely known in the 20th century for occasional red-colouring of its waters caused by microscopic organisms.
Today the lake and surrounding valley are valued for hiking, wildlife observation and scenic mountain views; marked trails and visitor information are provided in the valley. The lakeshore sits at a mountain elevation and is reached by forest and alpine paths rather than by large roads.
Historically the red-colouring episodes were observed until the mid-20th century and attracted scientific attention; subsequent environmental changes ended the phenomenon. The valley and lake have been managed for conservation and low-impact tourism since the late 20th century.
Lago di Tovel lies in the Adamello-Brenta area of Trentino within the Brenta Dolomites region, in a glacially shaped valley surrounded by steep forested slopes and alpine meadows.
- Red-water phenomenon: Formerly noted for a seasonal red-colouring phenomenon caused by aquatic organisms, which disappeared in the mid-20th century.
- Protected area and trails: Situated inside a protected mountain area with marked trails, the lake is a popular day-hike destination in Trentino.
