Lago Bianco is an artificial alpine lake and reservoir located on the Bernina Pass in the eastern Swiss Alps. It was formed by damming and functions as part of local hydroelectric and water management systems.
The lake is set at high elevation and is characterized by pale, glacially influenced water that gives it a light coloration and its name. Roads and the adjacent Bernina railway provide views of the lake along the pass.
The reservoir was created in the course of 20th-century engineering works for water management and power generation in the Bernina area. It remains an important local water body and scenic landmark along the pass.
Geographically it sits on the Bernina Pass in the canton of Graubünden, along the route between St. Moritz and the Poschiavo valley at high alpine altitude.
- Transport proximity: Located near the Bernina Pass, the lake is adjacent to the Bernina road and is visible from the Bernina railway line that runs close to its shore.
- Seasonal access: Sits at high alpine elevation and is often ice- or snow-affected outside the summer months, so summer visits give the fullest access and views.
