Main image

Lagginhorn is a 4,010-metre mountain in the Valais canton of Switzerland, part of the Pennine Alps. It is counted among the Swiss four-thousanders and is noted for its steep faces and alpine routes.

The mountain is primarily visited by climbers; routes involve glacier travel and alpine rock, and the peak is often climbed in combination with neighbouring summits. Approach routes come from valleys on either side of the massif and require mountaineering equipment and experience.

Lagginhorn is a natural Alpine summit formed in the high Pennine chain and has been part of the established mountaineering history of Valais since the golden age of alpinism. Its glaciers and routes have changed over time with retreating ice, affecting typical approaches.

The mountain rises above the Saas Valley area of Valais; nearby access points include mountain villages in the Saas region and valleys leading up into the high alpine zone.

  • Elevation: Summit elevation is 4,010 metres, making it one of the 4,000-metre peaks in the Swiss Pennine Alps and a target for experienced alpine climbers.
