Lady Elliot Island

Lady Elliot Island is a coral cay at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia, designated as a conservation park and marine sanctuary. The island supports reef-based tourism focused on snorkeling, diving and wildlife observation.

The surrounding reef features shallow lagoons and coral bommies that attract manta rays, turtles and a variety of reef fishes, and reef walks and guided snorkel trips are main visitor activities. The cay also serves as an important seabird and turtle nesting site.

Conservation management restricts some activities to protect nesting birds and marine habitat; visitor numbers are managed through the island’s eco-resort and day-trip operators. Facilities are small-scale, with a runway for light aircraft and simple guest accommodation.

The island sits at the southern extremity of the Great Barrier Reef, off the Queensland coast and reachable by scenic flights or boat transfers from mainland ports such as Bundaberg and Hervey Bay.
