La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná

La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná is a major Jesuit mission ruin in Itapúa Department, Paraguay, and one of the principal components of the Jesuit Missions World Heritage site. The complex preserves large stone constructions including the remains of a monumental church and the rectilinear plaza that organised mission life.

Architectural features include carved stone portals and structural ruins that illustrate the scale and ambition of 17th- and 18th-century Jesuit building projects in the region. The remains are laid out around a central plaza used historically for religious and communal activities.

The mission was established and built by Jesuit missionaries in the late 1600s and early 1700s to serve Guarani Christian communities; it declined after the Jesuit expulsion from Spanish territories in 1767. Subsequent centuries saw partial collapse and later archaeological stabilisation.

The site is located in southeastern Paraguay’s Itapúa Department, adjacent to the modern settlement of Trinidad, and is accessible by road from regional centres including Encarnación.
