La Palma
Island Canary Island with volcanic terrain and laurel forests
La Palma hosts the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, expansive laurel-forest trails and recent volcanic landscapes; hikers and amateur astronomers come for dark skies and crater walks.
La Palma is a volcanic island in the Canary Islands archipelago of Spain, characterised by steep topography, deep ravines and a mix of pine forest and volcanic landscapes. It is one of the more mountainous Canary Islands and is recognised for clear skies and scientific observatories.
Visitors come for hiking across volcanic ridges, stargazing at high-elevation observatories and exploring the giant caldera. The island’s scenery includes volcanic cones, fertile terraces and dramatic coastal cliffs with viewpoints and hiking paths.
La Palma experienced a significant volcanic eruption along the Cumbre Vieja ridge in 2021, which produced lava flows and localised disruption. Historically the island developed through successive volcanic activity that created the present ridges and calderas.
The island lies off the northwest coast of Africa as part of the Canary archipelago; its main town and ports provide connections by air and sea to other islands and to mainland Spain.
- Transport links: The island has an airport with regular flights from other Canary Islands and the Spanish mainland; ferries connect it to nearby islands seasonally.
- Astronomy: La Palma is known for dark-sky conditions and an active astronomical community; the summit observatory is a major research facility in Europe.
What to See #
- Roque de los Muchachos Observatory: A high ridge and summit area that hosts major astronomical observatories due to clear skies and elevation around 2,400 metres.
- Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge: A volcanic ridge on the island that produced the 2021 eruption; it forms a long, active basaltic volcanic system with fissures and cones.
- Caldera de Taburiente: A national park centred on a large caldera with pine forests, steep ravines and hiking trails that showcase the island's volcanic geomorphology.
How to Get to La Palma #
La Palma is reached by air to La Palma Airport (often marketed as SPC) with regular inter‑island flights from Tenerife, Gran Canaria and some connections to mainland Spain, or by ferry from Tenerife to the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma (operators and schedules vary).
On arrival the island’s main coastal road (LP‑1) links towns and trailheads; hiring a car is the most convenient way to reach viewpoints and the island’s parks. The ferry terminal and the airport both give easy road access into Santa Cruz de La Palma and the island’s road network.
Tips for Visiting La Palma #
- Roque de los Muchachos is the island's best stargazing spot-plan night visits on moonless evenings and check road access from El Paso or Puntagorda since conditions can be cool and windy at altitude.
- For the Caldera de Taburiente and central highlands, use Mirador de la Cumbrecita as a starting viewpoint and arrive early to avoid the handful of day visitors and tour buses that concentrate there.
- Explore the southern Fuencaliente area for volcanic landscapes, the salt pans and local wineries-these attractions are often overlooked by visitors focused on the north and are best visited later in the day when coastal light is dramatic.
Best Time to Visit La Palma #
La Palma is pleasant year‑round; spring and early autumn are often best for hiking and outdoor activities with mild conditions and fewer crowds.
