La Mano de Punta del Este
Monument Iconic beachfront sculpture depicting a giant hand
On Punta del Este’s Playa Brava, La Mano is a large concrete sculpture emerging from sand; visitors stop for photographs, beachgoing and the city’s seasonal nightlife.
La Mano de Punta del Este is a prominent five-fingered concrete sculpture that emerges from the sand on Brava Beach at Punta del Este, Uruguay. Created by Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal and installed in 1982, the work is locally known as La Mano or Monumento al Ahogado.
The sculpture’s oversized fingers are intended as a visual landmark on the shoreline and are a popular photo spot and meeting point for visitors. Its seaside position makes it highly visible from the beach; the site is open to the public and visited year-round.
The work was produced as part of an international sculpture event and has since become an iconic symbol of Punta del Este’s coastal landscape.
