La Maddalena is the main island and principal town of the La Maddalena Archipelago off the northeast coast of Sardinia, Italy. The archipelago and its marine environment are protected under the Parco Nazionale Arcipelago di La Maddalena.
The town developed as a fishing and maritime community and later acquired strategic and naval importance. Giuseppe Garibaldi lived and died on nearby Caprera in the 19th century, and his home there is preserved as a museum and national monument.
La Maddalena lies off Sardinia’s northeastern tip, opposite the small port town of Palau on the Sardinian mainland. Regular ferries connect Palau and La Maddalena, making the island easily reachable from northern Sardinia.

How to Get to La Maddalena #
Ferries run from Palau (on Sardinia’s northern coast) to La Maddalena several times daily; crossing takes about 20 minutes. From Olbia airport, drive or take bus service to Palau (approx. 1-1.5 hours) and then the short ferry. Once on the island, most points are walkable from the main port; hire boats and car rentals are available for island exploration.

- Catch the ferry timetable in Palau (Porto) - boat frequencies vary seasonally and can be reduced in winter.
- Hire a small motorboat for access to lesser-visited coves and the archipelago's quieter beaches.
