La Fenice

La Fenice is Venice’s principal opera house, located in the Cannaregio district, and one of Italy’s most important theatres, originally opened in 1792.

Built in 1792, the theatre quickly became a venue for premieres by major Italian composers. It has suffered several catastrophic fires over its history, most recently in 1996, and was rebuilt and reopened in 2003, preserving historic decorative schemes while updating technical and safety systems.

Sited on the Grand Canal side of central Venice, it is within walking distance of the Santa Lucia train station and close to several vaporetto stops in the Cannaregio area.

• Rebuilding: Reopened in 2003 after a major reconstruction following a 1996 fire; the theatre's name means "the phoenix" reflecting its history of fires and rebuildings.
• Programming: Most performances are Italian opera and symphonic concerts; check the season schedule in advance as many performances sell out.

• Sala Grande: The Sala Grande is the main auditorium with tiered boxes and roughly one thousand seats, arranged in a horseshoe layout typical of 19th century Italian opera houses.
• Stage and backstage: The stage complex includes a traditional proscenium, orchestra pit and modern backstage facilities installed during the post-1996 reconstruction to support opera and ballet productions.
• Foyer and museum: The foyer and small museum display historical costumes, set sketches and documents related to the theatre's premieres and repeated restorations.
