Kythnos
Island Cycladic Greek island with beaches and thermal springs
Kythnos in the Cyclades combines pebble beaches, hiking trails and the thermal baths at Loutra village. Visitors use short ferry links from Athens for day trips, local tavernas and coastal swimming.
Kythnos is a Greek island in the Cyclades group, administratively in the South Aegean. It is a low, rocky island known for traditional villages, beaches and a small spa tradition.
Sandy coves and sheltered bays, the narrow double-sandbar beach known as Kolona, and the thermal springs at Loutra. The island’s capital (Chora) and the port of Merichas provide tavernas, traditional architecture and connections to other islands.
Kythnos has been inhabited since antiquity and developed through successive Greek historical periods into a cluster of fishing and farming settlements with a maritime economy. Its hot springs at Loutra have long attracted local visitors.
Geographically it lies among the western Cyclades and is accessed by regular ferries from the port of Piraeus and by inter-island services; the island’s roads link the port to Chora and the main beaches.
- Ferry access: Ferries link the island to Piraeus (Athens) and neighbouring Cycladic islands; Merichas is the main port for ferry arrivals and departures.
- Kolona beach note: Kolona is a distinctive double-sandbar beach that forms a narrow isthmus to a small islet and is best visited in calm weather for swimming and walking along the sandbar.
What to See #
- Kolona (tombolo) beach: Kolona beach - a narrow sandbar and twin-sandy-spit beach that links the mainland to a small islet and is one of the island's most photographed shorelines.
- Loutra hot springs: Loutra thermal springs and spa district, known locally for hot springs and seaside baths that attract visitors seeking thermal waters.
- Merichas and Chora: Merichas harbour and Chora (Hora) - the island's main port village and the traditional uphill capital with whitewashed houses and narrow streets.
How to Get to Kythnos #
Kythnos is reached by ferry from Athens: regular conventional and fast ferries sail from Piraeus and from Lavrio to Kythnos’ main port, Merichas. Ferries from Piraeus are longer (several hours) while crossings from Lavrio are typically faster; schedules vary by season. Once in Merichas the island’s villages and beaches are a short taxi or local‑bus ride away (Chora is roughly a few kilometres inland/uphill from the port).
Tips for Visiting Kythnos #
- Catch a morning ferry from Piraeus or Lavrio to Kythnos to maximize your day on arrival; Merichas is the island's main port and the most convenient landing point for onward buses and rentals.
- Plan at least one visit to Loutra (the thermal springs) and the isthmus beach of Kolona - Kolona is unique and fills quickly mid‑day, so go early or late to avoid day‑boat crowds.
- Use the island's small public-bus network from Merichas to reach inland villages like Dryopida and the traditional pottery quarter, which many day‑trippers miss when they stay only on the main beaches.
Best Time to Visit Kythnos #
Visit in late spring (May-June) or early autumn for pleasant weather, open services and fewer crowds.
