Kykkos Monastery
Monument Orthodox monastery housing gilded icons and relics
High in the Troodos range, Kykkos is an 11th‑century Orthodox monastery known for its ornate chapel and museum; pilgrims and tourists come for religious art, mountain air and panoramic approaches by winding road.
Kykkos Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox monastery in the Troodos Mountains of Limassol District, Cyprus. Founded in the late 11th century, it is one of the island’s most important monastic centres and is known for its revered icon of the Virgin Mary.
The complex includes the main katholikon (church) with richly decorated interiors and a small museum that displays icons, vestments and ecclesiastical silver. Pilgrims and tourists come for religious services, icon veneration and the monastery’s collection of church treasures.
The monastery was established in the late 11th century and expanded over subsequent centuries; buildings have been rebuilt and renovated several times following fires and seismic events. Its wealth and influence grew through donations and endowments from Cypriot nobles and pilgrims.
Kykkos sits near the village of Pedoulas in the Troodos range and is reached by mountain roads from the coastal cities of Cyprus. It is accessible by car and bus services that link the main Troodos villages and monasteries.
- Kykkos icon: The monastery houses an icon of the Virgin Mary that is traditionally said to be painted by Luke the Evangelist; access to the icon itself is restricted and there are adjacent museum displays of ecclesiastical treasures.
- Visiting note: Modest dress is expected inside the church and parts of the complex can be crowded on major feast days, especially 15 August.

- Visit Kykkos Monastery early in the day to avoid coach groups and to have time to view the monastery museum and chapel before afternoon services or crowds.
- Combine the visit with a scenic drive through the Troodos foothills-the monastery sits above the valley so the approach provides good mountain views and makes for a pleasant day trip.
- Dress modestly inside the church and check opening times in advance, as parts of the complex (the museum or chapels) can close for services or special events.
