Kuk Swamp

Kuk Swamp is an archaeological landscape in the highlands of Papua New Guinea known for evidence of early agriculture. Excavations uncovered remnants of drainage works, planting basins and other modifications indicating deliberate cultivation practices in prehistoric times.

The site contains a complex of swamp areas that were modified by past communities using ditches and mounds to manage water and plant growth; these features provide direct archaeological evidence for early cultivation in the New Guinea Highlands. Research at Kuk Swamp has been central to understanding the independent development of agriculture in this region.

Fieldwork at Kuk Swamp identified stratified deposits and modification of wetland environments over several millennia, offering dates and material traces that document the transition to food-production systems in the area. The site has been the subject of archaeological study since the late 20th century.

Kuk Swamp lies in the Wahgi Valley of Papua New Guinea’s highlands, in an upland agricultural landscape within Western Highlands Province. The area is inland from coastal regions and is typically accessed from regional highland towns.
