Książ Castle
Castle Massive Polish castle with layered architectural styles and history.
Książ Castle stands above the Pełcznica valley near Wałbrzych, with Baroque and Gothic elements, terraced gardens and wartime tunnels; tourists tour the rooms, grounds and onsite exhibits.
Książ Castle is a large multi-wing castle complex near Wałbrzych in Lower Silesia, Poland, occupying a sandstone ridge above the Pełcznica valley. The complex combines medieval origins with later Baroque and Rococo rebuilding and contains several hundred rooms in its main palace block.
Visitors explore state rooms, historic interiors, and extensive terraces and gardens that slope down toward the surrounding parkland; guided tours cover principal halls and viewpoints. An extensive system of corridors and galleries beneath and around the castle, enlarged during the Second World War, forms a notable subterranean feature.
The site originated in the 13th century and was developed over centuries by regional noble families, most notably the Hochberg family, who transformed the complex into a palatial seat. In the 20th century, the castle was seized and modified during the Nazi period, leaving a legacy of underground works and later post-war restoration efforts.
Książ Castle sits above the town of Wałbrzych in Lower Silesia, in south-western Poland, surrounded by mixed forest and parkland and close to other Silesian historic sites.
- Scale and interiors: One of Poland's largest castles with roughly 400 rooms and a long history of changes in style from medieval fortification to palatial residence.
- Wartime tunnels: Subterranean wartime tunnels associated with Nazi Project Riese are beneath the castle; parts of these passages are now a visitor feature but remain restricted in sections.
What to See #
- Main castle complex: The main palace complex includes more than 400 rooms arranged around courtyards and state apartments, reflecting Gothic, Baroque and Rococo phases of construction.
- Underground tunnels (Project Riese): A network of underground passages and chambers beneath and near the castle were expanded during World War II as part of the Nazi Project Riese; many tunnels are accessible or visible on guided tours.
- Gardens and terraces: Terraced gardens, parkland and viewpoints on the slopes offer landscaped walks and views over the Pełcznica valley and the nearby town of Wałbrzych.

Książ Castle is just above Wałbrzych in Lower Silesia. By car it’s about 70-85 km southwest of Wrocław via the A4 motorway and then regional roads (roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic); follow signs to Wałbrzych and Książ/Zamek Książ. From Wałbrzych town centre there are local buses or short taxi rides to the castle (the drive from central Wałbrzych is about 10-15 minutes); there is visitor parking and a short walk from parking areas to the castle grounds.
Tips for Visiting Książ Castle #
- Book timed interior and special tours (such as the underground Riese-related tunnels if offered) in advance, since these have limited capacity and can sell out on weekends and holidays.
- Arrive during the first opening hour or in late afternoon to avoid coach groups and to get unobstructed views from the terraces overlooking the park and valley.
- Don't skip the surrounding landscape: the castle park paths, viewpoints on the opposite bank of the Pełcznica valley and any temporary exhibitions in the castle complex reveal history and views many visitors miss in a quick walk‑through.
