Krzemionki Prehistoric Striped Flint Mining Region
Historical Site Extensive prehistoric flint mines and Neolithic mining features
Krzemionki’s Neolithic striped-flint mines include extraction pits and underground galleries with a visitor trail and reconstructions; archaeologists and tourists learn about ancient tool-making techniques.
The Krzemionki Prehistoric Striped Flint Mining Region is a large prehistoric mining complex in south-central Poland where communities quarried striped flint for tool production during the Neolithic. The site preserves trenches, shafts and underground galleries that document early specialised extraction and tool-making activities.
Visitors can follow an interpretive trail through the reserve to observe lines of extraction pits and preserved shafts, and visit a small museum that displays artefacts and explains mining techniques. Archaeological study has demonstrated the organised nature of flint procurement and the regional significance of the material in prehistoric exchange.
The complex lies near the town of Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski in the south-central part of Poland and is managed as an archaeological reserve with conservation measures and visitor facilities.
- Neolithic flint extraction: The site preserves a prehistoric mining landscape where striped flint was extracted and prepared for distribution in the 4th and 3rd millennia BCE.
- Preserved shafts and interpretive trail: Visible mine shafts and trenches are preserved in the landscape and are interpreted by an on-site trail and museum for visitors.
