Krn is a mountain in the Julian Alps, located in the Municipality of Kobarid in western Slovenia, notable for its prominence in the local alpine landscape.
The mountain has long been part of local mountaineering routes in the Julian Alps and featured in regional events during the First World War in the surrounding valley, which saw front-line activity. Mountain huts and marked trails established over the 19th and 20th centuries shaped modern access routes.
Krn sits in western Slovenia within the Julian Alps, rising above the So?a Valley and near the towns of Kobarid and Bovec, forming a recognizable peak in the regional alpine chain.

What to See #

Tips for Visiting Krn #
- Start very early in summer (pre-dawn to early morning) to get clear weather and avoid the frequent afternoon mountain storms and the busiest hours on the trail; sunrise also gives the best light on the Soča Valley.
- Use the Kobarid/Drežnica side trailheads as your main approach - they are the usual access points from the Municipality of Kobarid and give the classic southern ridge route and views.
- Most visitors focus on the summit; take time on the southern ridges and small sub-peaks for views back over the Krn Lakes and the Soča gorge - those vantage points are less crowded and photograph well.
