Krk is a large Adriatic island in the northern Croatian coast within Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. It is one of Croatia’s largest islands and includes several towns and villages that form permanent communities as well as tourist facilities.
The island offers a mix of beaches, historic town centres and inland villages; visitors commonly travel by car via the island bridge and explore coastal towns, marinas and local cuisine. Leisure activities include swimming, boating and visiting archaeological and medieval sites found in island towns.
Human settlement on Krk has ancient and medieval roots, and the island’s towns show layers of historical development from Roman and medieval periods through to present tourism infrastructure. Over the 20th century it developed stronger transport links to the mainland, increasing year-round habitation and visitor numbers.
Krk lies in the northern Adriatic Sea, close to the Istrian peninsula and the city of Rijeka, and is connected to the mainland by a permanent bridge at the island’s western entrance.
- Bridge connection: Connected to the Croatian mainland by a bridge, giving road access that makes it one of the most accessible large Adriatic islands.
