Krásna Hôrka Castle

Krásna Hôrka Castle is a hilltop medieval castle in the Košice Region of eastern Slovakia with origins in the 14th century. It has been operated as a historic site and museum showcasing regional castle architecture and collections.

Visitors come to see the castle’s hilltop defensive complex, surviving towers and palace wings, and the museum displays that interpreted its medieval and early modern history. The elevated position gives views over the surrounding countryside and served defensive purposes.

The castle was built in the 14th century and underwent successive alterations in the Renaissance and Baroque periods as ownership and military needs changed. In February 2012 a large fire severely damaged significant parts of the structure and its interiors, after which restoration and conservation work has been undertaken.

Krásna Hôrka sits above the village of Krásnohorské Podhradie in the Rožňava district of the Košice Region in eastern Slovakia, occupying a prominent rocky hill in a rural landscape.
