The Krapina Neanderthal site is a key Middle Pleistocene palaeoanthropological locality near the town of Krapina in northern Croatia where extensive Neanderthal remains were found. The site produced a large assemblage of fossil bones and stone tools that rank among Europe’s most important Neanderthal collections.

The exposed excavation area on Hušnjakovo Hill and the adjacent museum that presents the finds, casts and interpretive displays about Neanderthal anatomy and behaviour. The site is used for research and public education, with displays aimed at illustrating life and technology of Neanderthals.

Excavations began in 1899 under Dragutin Gorjanović-Kramberger and continued in the early 20th century, establishing the site as a major reference for Neanderthal studies. Radiometric and stratigraphic work places the remains in the Middle Pleistocene, making the locality important for understanding Neanderthal populations in Europe.

The site lies just outside the town of Krapina in Krapina-Zagorje County, within easy driving distance of Zagreb to the northwest and accessible by local roads. The excavation area and museum are co-located on Hušnjakovo Hill overlooking the surrounding low hills.

  • Major excavation: Excavated at the turn of the 20th century by Dragutin Gorjanović-Kramberger, the site yielded hundreds of Neanderthal remains and extensive stone tool assemblages.
