The Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, often called the Polish Jura, is a limestone plateau in southern Poland stretching between the cities of Kraków and Częstochowa. It is characterised by karst topography including cliffs, caves, valleys and isolated rock formations.
The area contains a series of medieval hilltop castles and watchpoints known collectively as the Eagles’ Nests, many established in the 14th century as part of regional defence. Trails, climbing routes and scenic viewpoints across limestone ridges draw walkers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Parts of the upland are protected in reserves and parks, including Ojców National Park, and the region sits north of Kraków within Poland’s southern upland landscapes.
- Landscape: Characterised by karst landforms - limestone cliffs, caves, natural rock pillars and narrow valleys - making it a centre for hiking and rock climbing.
- Historical note: Historically fortified in the Middle Ages, especially during the 14th century under royal programs to guard the Kraków region.
What to See #
- Ojców National Park: Ojców National Park is a compact protected area inside the upland noted for limestone cliffs, forested valleys and karst caves; it is the smallest national park in Poland and a popular day-visit destination.
- Eagles' Nests Trail: The Eagles' Nests (Szlak Orlich Gniazd) are a chain of medieval hilltop castles and fortifications sited on limestone escarpments between Kraków and Częstochowa, many dating to the 14th century.

Tips for Visiting Kraków-Częstochowa Upland #
