Koufonisia
Islands Cycladic island group with sandy beaches and relaxed atmosphere
Koufonisia in the Small Cyclades comprises low islands with small beaches, clear swimming waters and plain tavernas; visitors come for relaxed island‑hopping, sea swims and short bicycle rides.
Koufonisia refers to a pair of small islands in the Small Cyclades archipelago in the Aegean Sea, South Aegean, Greece. The two principal islands are often described as Pano (Ano) Koufonisi and Kato Koufonisi; one is inhabited with a small village and tourist facilities while the other is largely uninhabited.
The islands are favoured for their sheltered beaches, clear turquoise waters and a low-rise, relaxed island character with walking paths and small harbours. Visitors commonly use Pano Koufonisi as a base for local boat trips, swimming and beach visits.
Historically the islands supported small-scale fishing and pastoral livelihoods; tourism expanded in the late 20th and early 21st centuries while development has remained low-density compared with larger Cycladic islands.
Koufonisia sit between Naxos and Amorgos in the central Aegean and are reached by regular ferries and local boat services from neighbouring islands.
- Access: The group belongs to the Small Cyclades and is commonly visited by ferry or day-trip boats from Naxos, Amorgos and other nearby islands.
What to See #
- Pano (Ano) Koufonisi: Pano (Ano) Koufonisi is the main inhabited island with the principal village, small port and most tourist accommodation; it is the primary base for visitors.
- Kato Koufonisi: Kato Koufonisi is largely uninhabited and known for quieter coves and sea caves, reachable by short boat trips from Pano Koufonisi.
How to Get to Koufonisia #
Koufonisia (the Small Cyclades) is served by summer and year‑round ferries and high‑speed boats from nearby islands such as Naxos, Amorgos and Paros, and by seasonal services from Piraeus (Athens). Ferries dock at the main harbour; the village and beaches are a short walk from the pier. From Athens you first travel to Piraeus port (by road or metro) to catch inter-island services.
Tips for Visiting Koufonisia #
- Arrive early or late in the day to avoid day-tripper peaks from Naxos and nearby islands-Pano and Kato Koufonisi are small and feel crowded quickly during high season.
- Use the local small-boat excursions that run between the islets to reach secluded coves and sea caves that most day visitors miss, and plan your ferry timings because services back to larger islands thin out in the evening.
- Visit in May-June or September to enjoy warm weather with fewer crowds and more availability at family-run tavernas and guesthouses.
