Kőszeg Mountains
Mountains Small foothill range on Austrian–Hungarian border
The Kőszeg Mountains straddle the Austria-Hungary border; hikers and cyclists use its trails, and the nearby town of Kőszeg provides historic streets and mountain views.
The Kőszeg Mountains (Kőszegi-hegység) are a low mountain range on the Austria-Hungary border in the eastern foothills of the Alps. The range consists of forested hills and isolated peaks rather than high alpine summits.
Hiking paths, forest tracks and ridge walks provide access to viewpoints and small mountain refuges; the highest summit, Írott-kő, reaches about 884 metres and has an observation tower. The area is valued for accessible day hikes, mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland, and panoramic views over the surrounding lowlands.
Historically the mountains formed a natural border region and supported small-scale forestry and pastoral activities. Parts of the range are protected for conservation and recreational use.
Located in eastern Austria and western Hungary, the Kőszeg Mountains sit near the Austrian state border close to the town of Kőszeg and the city of Sopron, within a short drive of both towns.
