Kosciuszko National Park is a protected area in New South Wales that contains Australia’s highest mainland peak, Mount Kosciuszko. The park protects alpine and subalpine landscapes within the Snowy Mountains.
Visitors come for high-country walking, cycling and summer wildflower viewing, and for extensive winter snow sports at resorts such as Perisher, Thredbo and Charlotte Pass. The park contains distinctive features including alpine pastures, glacial lakes and the Kosciuszko plateau; the summit of Mount Kosciuszko is 2,228 metres above sea level.
The mountain was named by explorer Paweł (Paul) Strzelecki in 1840 after the Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko; over the 19th and 20th centuries the Snowy Mountains area saw pastoralism develop alongside growing alpine recreation and ski developments. Park designation and management have focused on protecting fragile alpine ecosystems while accommodating recreation.
The park lies in southeastern New South Wales in the Snowy Mountains region. It is reachable by road from regional centres and is within driving distance of Canberra and other southern Australian cities; major access points include resort villages and trailheads built for both summer and winter visitors.

How to Get to Kosciuszko National Park #
Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales is reached by road via the Snowy Mountains Highway and Alpine Way. Common gateways are Jindabyne, Thredbo and Charlotte Pass: drive from Canberra (roughly a 2.5-3 hour drive) via the Monaro Highway to Cooma then on to Jindabyne, or from Sydney (roughly 5-6 hours) via the Hume Highway and Snowy Mountains routes. Public coach services and seasonal shuttles operate from Canberra and Sydney to Jindabyne/Thredbo; once in Jindabyne/Thredbo many park trailheads are a short walk from town.
Tips for Visiting Kosciuszko National Park #
- Start the main summit walk from Thredbo to make use of the chairlift in summer if you want to shorten the ascent and enjoy panoramic views on the Kosciuszko Walkway; Charlotte Pass is the other established trailhead for a full alpine approach.
- Set out early in the day to avoid afternoon alpine storms and to beat the busiest periods on the main walking tracks, and check local park alerts for weather, trail closures and seasonal restrictions.

For hiking and alpine scenery go in summer (December-February); for snow sports the winter months (June-August) are best.
