Konstanz Minster

Konstanz Minster (Münster) is the cathedral of Konstanz on the shores of Lake Constance in southwestern Germany, with origins in the early medieval period. The present building reflects major Romanesque and Gothic construction phases from the Middle Ages.

The cathedral’s tower provides panoramic views over the old town, the Rhine outflow and Lake Constance. Inside, the nave and choir exhibit Romanesque and Gothic stonework and liturgical fittings that attract visitors interested in medieval ecclesiastical architecture.

The site has housed a cathedral since the early medieval era and the current church grew through construction and alteration between roughly the 11th and 16th centuries. The cathedral and the city are closely associated with the Council of Constance held in the early 15th century.

It stands in Konstanz’s historic centre on the western shore of Lake Constance, close to the Swiss border and the city’s lakeside promenades.
