Königsplatz, Munich

Königsplatz is a Neoclassical public square in Munich’s Maxvorstadt district, created in the 19th century as an architectural ensemble for art and civic buildings. It is characterized by large classical façades and an open, axial layout.

The square is flanked by the Glyptothek and the Staatliche Antikensammlung, two major museums of ancient sculpture and antiquities, and is terminated by the Propylaea gate. The length and scale of the façades and the clustering of museums make it a focal point for Munich’s cultural district.

The ensemble was planned and built in the first half of the 19th century under the patronage of the Bavarian monarchy to display classical art and to lend civic grandeur to the area. Over time the square has remained a cultural and event space and retains its museum functions.

Königsplatz lies north of Munich’s central core in the Maxvorstadt neighbourhood, roughly 1 kilometre from Marienplatz and adjacent to other museum streets and university buildings. It is well served by public transport and pedestrian routes through the cultural quarter.
