Kolossi Castle is a small medieval fortress near the village of Kolossi in southern Cyprus, notable as a well-preserved example of Crusader-period military architecture. The surviving stone keep and curtain walls date mainly to the medieval period and the site is closely associated with the island’s medieval fortifications.
The castle comprises a rectangular walled enclosure and a robust square keep. Internally the keep is organized over several floors with narrow spiral staircases and defensive features typical of 13th- and 14th-century military design.
The original stronghold was established in the Crusader period and later served as a commandery for the military orders on Cyprus; the castle and surrounding estate were linked to medieval sugar production and to the production and trade of Commandaria wine. The present structures reflect rebuilding and repairs carried out in the later medieval centuries.
Kolossi lies a short drive inland from the Limassol coastal plain, near the modern village that shares its name and accessible from Limassol and the Larnaca-Limassol road.

How to Get to Kolossi Castle #
Kolossi Castle sits just west of Limassol near the village of Kolossi. By car it’s about 14 km (15-25 minutes) from Limassol city centre; follow the Limassol-Paphos road and take the signed Kolossi exit from the A6 motorway. Parking is available close to the castle.
Local buses run from Limassol toward Kolossi village; the castle is a short walk (a few minutes) from the village/bus stop - ask for the Kolossi Castle stop.
Tips for Visiting Kolossi Castle #
- Visit early in the morning or late afternoon: these times have softer light for photos and far fewer tour buses than midday.
- Use the small parking/ticket area directly beside the castle on the Limassol-Paphos road as your arrival point-this gives immediate access to the main entrance and tower.
- Climb the castle tower and circle the ramparts: the interior is compact but the tower offers the best views and is often skipped by visitors who only photograph the exterior.
- Combine the visit with a short stop at a local Commandaria winery or the nearby archaeological site at Kourion to make the short trip more worthwhile.
