Kochelsee is a mountain lake in Upper Bavaria, Germany, situated at the northern edge of the Bavarian Alps near the town of Kochel am See. It is a regional recreational lake used for boating, swimming and lakeside recreation.

The lake is framed by alpine foothills and offers straightforward lakeside walking and viewpoints toward the surrounding mountains. Facilities and visitor services are concentrated in the lakeside towns and villages.

Historically the lake and surrounding valley have been used for fishing, transport and local industry; in the 20th century hydroelectric developments in the region linked Kochelsee into regional power systems. The shoreline settlements developed as tourist and local service centres over time.

Kochelsee lies in southern Bavaria, roughly a drive of about an hour or slightly more from Munich depending on traffic. The immediate landscape is alpine foothills with forested slopes rising from the lake’s shore.

  • Main access point: The lakeshore town of Kochel am See provides lakefront access, accommodation and boat hire, making it the main base for visitors.
  • Recreation: The lake lies at the foot of steep Alpine foothills and is used for swimming, boating and lakeside walking during the warmer months.
