Kočevski Rog is a karst plateau and extensive forested area in southern Slovenia, known for its large tracts of old-growth woodland and remote character. The forested area covers several hundred square kilometres and is one of the region’s largest continuous forest landscapes.
The area is valued for hiking, wildlife-watching and remote forestry landscapes rather than formal visitor attractions; trails and forest roads provide opportunities for multi-hour and multi-day routes. Nature interest centers on intact beech and mixed forests and populations of large mammals, while cultural traces include abandoned Gottschee German villages scattered through the woods.
Historically the area was settled by the Gottschee German community from the medieval period until the 20th century and later became strategically important during World War II and its aftermath. Parts of the plateau were used by partisans in the war and the postwar history includes politically sensitive events connected with reprisals in 1945.
The plateau sits in southeast Slovenia near the town of Kočevje within the Municipality of Dolenjske Toplice administrative area, occupying karst terrain of the Dinaric region. The landscape is heavily forested with limited permanent settlement and a network of forestry tracks rather than major roads.
- Wildlife: Large tracts are still forested and sparsely populated, making it one of the largest continuous forest areas in Slovenia and a stronghold for large carnivores such as brown bear, wolf and lynx.
- Access: Access is mainly via forest roads and marked trails; infrastructure is limited so plan for backcountry conditions and check for hunting seasons.
