Kiwai Island is an inhabited island in the Fly River delta of Western Province, Papua New Guinea. It is closely associated with the indigenous Kiwai people and the languages named after them.
The island comprises a series of villages and coastal settlements dependent on fishing and riverine transport; visitor facilities are limited and travel is typically by private or charter boat from nearby coastal towns. The island is noted for its local maritime culture rather than tourism infrastructure.
Kiwai Island has been inhabited by Kiwai communities for many generations and later experienced contact with missionaries and colonial administrations during the 19th and 20th centuries. Its settlements and cultural practices reflect continuous local occupation.
