Kitzbühel Alps
Mountains Alpine mountain range popular for skiing and hiking
In Tyrol, the Kitzbühel Alps combine timbered villages with high alpine terrain. Winter brings the Hahnenkamm ski races and resort skiing; summer offers hiking, mountain huts and panoramic lifts.
The Kitzbühel Alps are an alpine mountain range in western Austria, primarily within the state of Tyrol and extending into neighbouring areas. The range contains numerous peaks rising above 2,000 metres and supports extensive ski and mountain tourism infrastructure.
Ski resorts, lift networks and marked trails dominate the lower and mid slopes, while higher ridges provide hiking and alpine routes in summer. The area is internationally known for winter sports and hosts major events and a dense local tourism economy.
Historically the mountains were used for seasonal grazing and forestry; during the 20th century resort development transformed parts of the range into an international skiing destination. The town of Kitzbühel developed into the region’s principal resort and service centre.
The Kitzbühel Alps are centred on the town of Kitzbühel in Tyrol and form a transitional zone between the higher central Alps and lower ranges to the north and east.
- Extent and terrain: The range is located primarily in the Austrian state of Tyrol, extending into adjacent federal states, with many peaks exceeding 2,000 metres and substantial ski infrastructure.
- Main activities: International alpine ski competition and tourism are major uses of the range, anchored by the town of Kitzbühel and its annual Hahnenkamm race.
