Kiskunság National Park
National Park Hungarian steppe national park protecting marshes and grasslands
A protected lowland plain in Bács-Kiskun county with sand dunes, alkali lakes and steppe habitat; birdwatchers, cyclists and horseback riders visit for open landscapes and wildlife.
Kiskunság National Park protects a large area of lowland sand plains, alkaline lakes and grassland between the Danube and Tisza rivers in central Hungary. It preserves characteristic Pannonian steppe and dune landscapes.
The area was set aside for nature conservation to protect the distinctive sand-steppe habitats and associated wildlife; management has combined species protection with visitor access and regional land-use planning. Traditional pastoral practices have shaped parts of the landscape over centuries.
The park lies in Bács-Kiskun County in central Hungary between the Danube and Tisza rivers, with access from regional towns and road networks across the Great Hungarian Plain.
- Habitats: The park protects sand-steppe (puszta) habitat, alkaline lakes and dune systems that are important for migratory birds and specialised grassland species.

- Include Bugac (the puszta area) or other designated puszta sites in your itinerary to see the sand‑steppe landscape and traditional pastoral scenery that many visitors miss when sticking to the lakes.
- Stop at a Kiskunság visitor centre on arrival to pick up up‑to‑date trail maps and information on seasonal restrictions or guided walks - they'll point you to hides and lookout towers where bird activity concentrates.
