Kiriwina is the largest island of the Trobriand Islands in Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. It functions as the main island of the group and is the largest inhabited landmass in that archipelago.

The island contains multiple coastal villages and traditional settlements, with local lifeways that remain important to the community. Beaches and shallow lagoon waters surround much of the island, which supports fishing and small-scale agriculture.

Kiriwina has long been inhabited by Melanesian communities and forms part of the Trobriand cultural area; it has continued local social and economic practices into the present day. Contact with outsiders increased during the 19th and 20th centuries, alongside missionary and colonial engagements.

Geographically, Kiriwina lies off the eastern tip of Papua New Guinea in Milne Bay Province, within the Solomon Sea region of the country.

  • Local role: Largest island of the Trobriand Islands group and the administrative centre for the local island cluster.

How to Get to Kiriwina #

Kiriwina (the main island of the Trobriand group) is served by scheduled domestic flights to Losuia Airport on Kiriwina from Port Moresby and from some regional PNG airports; Air Niugini and PNG Air operate the Port Moresby-Losuia route at times. The airstrip (Losuia) is the usual arrival point on the island.

There are also boat connections from nearby Milne Bay ports (Alotau/Samarai) on less frequent passenger or cargo services; on arrival at Losuia you disembark at the island and local transport (boats/taxis) will take you to villages - no long road transfers are required once on the island.

Tips for Visiting Kiriwina #

  • Kiriwina (the largest Trobriand Island) is normally reached by scheduled flights to Losuia from Alotau - book flights and any required inter-island transfers well in advance because services are limited.
  • Arrange permission and local guidance through the provincial authorities or a trusted local contact before arrival; village protocols and visitor arrangements are important in the Trobriands and a host or guide will smooth introductions.
  • Plan visits for the dry season (roughly May-October) when sea conditions and small‑air services are most reliable and local events or yam‑cultivation activities are easier to observe.
