Kinchega National Park is a protected area in far western New South Wales, Australia, located on the floodplain of the Darling River near Menindee. It preserves semi-arid river country and historic pastoral infrastructure.

The park conserves parts of the former Kinchega pastoral station and its associated buildings, which reflect the region’s 19th and early 20th century pastoral use. The area was later protected to conserve both cultural heritage and remnant riverine ecosystems.

Kinchega sits on the Darling River near the Menindee Lakes region in far western New South Wales, accessible from Menindee township and within the remote inland landscape of western NSW.

How to Get to Kinchega National Park #

Kinchega National Park lies beside the Menindee Lakes and is directly accessible from the township of Menindee. From Menindee it is a short drive on the Menindee-Pondage/Menindee Lakes access roads (typically 5-15 minutes from the town to park entry points and picnic areas). If coming from Broken Hill, drive east on the sealed Barrier Highway (A32) and then take the local Menindee turnoffs - the drive from Broken Hill to Menindee is roughly 100-120 km (about 1.5-2 hours by car), after which local roads lead into the park.

Tips for Visiting Kinchega National Park #

  • Base yourself in Menindee to access Kinchega's main attractions: the historic Kinchega Woolshed and the Menindee Lakes system are the park's highlights and are easiest to reach from town.
  • Expect many park roads to be unsealed and seasonally affected-check local road conditions after heavy rain and consider a high-clearance vehicle for remote tracks; camping and facilities are basic so confirm bookings and access ahead of time.
  • Visit in the cooler months (autumn/winter) for more comfortable daytime temperatures and better wildlife viewing; the lakes and nearby river margins are where birdwatchers and photographers get the most out of a trip.
