Keep River National Park
Park Northern Australia park protecting wetlands and escarpments
On the Northern Territory-Western Australia border, Keep River National Park combines sandstone escarpments with river floodplains; visitors come for birdwatching, Indigenous rock art and seasonal wetlands.
Keep River National Park is a protected area in the far northwest of Australia’s Northern Territory that conserves sandstone country, riverine floodplain and native woodlands. The park protects both geological features and habitats that support seasonal wildlife populations.
Visitors find short walking trails, viewpoints across the riverplain and examples of Aboriginal rock art at sandstone outcrops, along with opportunities to see wet-season birdlife concentrated around waterholes. Facilities are minimal and the park is managed for both conservation and low-impact recreation.
The park lies near the Northern Territory-Western Australia border in a remote area of northwestern Australia, accessed by sealed and unsealed roads from regional centres to the east and west. Its landscape is a mix of flat floodplain and low rugged sandstone country.
- When to visit: The park's best wildlife viewing occurs in the dry season when water concentrates in billabongs and river channels, attracting birds and mammals.
What to See #
- Sandstone escarpments: Sandstone escarpments and low plateaus that form the park's distinctive geology and provide short walking routes and viewpoints over seasonal floodplains.
- Keep River floodplain: Floodplain and riverine habitats along the Keep River that support wet-season birdlife and freshwater pools during the dry season.
Tips for Visiting Keep River National Park #
- Plan your visit during the dry season (roughly May-September); many roads and walking tracks become difficult or impassable during the wet season.
- Head to the sandstone escarpments and rock-art sites in the morning or late afternoon for the best light and higher wildlife activity-those times are also cooler for hiking.
- Check current park access and road conditions with the Northern Territory Parks service before you set out; some access tracks and facilities are seasonally closed or affected after heavy rains.
