Main image

Kawau Island is an island in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand, roughly 40 km north of central Auckland. It is known for its 19th-century historic reserve centred on a prominent seaside mansion.

The island’s main visitor highlights include the preserved 19th-century Mansion House, open to the public as part of a historic reserve, and visible ruins from 19th-century copper-mining activity. Boating, walking tracks and sheltered anchorages make it a frequent destination for day visitors arriving by ferry or private boat.

In the 19th century the island was developed as a private estate; the mansion and introduced plants and animals date from that period and reflect the island’s estate history. Mining activity from the mid-1800s left industrial ruins that remain visible along some coastal tracks.

Kawau Island lies in the Hauraki Gulf off the eastern coast of New Zealand’s North Island. The nearest mainland access point is Sandspit near Warkworth, with boat services and private charters linking the island to the mainland.

  • Access: Passenger ferries and charter boats operate from Sandspit near Warkworth to the island; private boats also commonly visit. Check seasonal timetables before travelling.
  • Wildlife: Introduced wildlife including small populations of wallabies are present and are a notable feature of the island's fauna; they are not native and are part of the island's 19th-century estate history.
