Katzensee
Lake Small recreational lake near Zurich, popular for swimming
A small recreational lake on Zurich’s outskirts, Katzensee offers public bathing areas, walking paths and grassy spots for weekend swimming and picnics.
Katzensee is a small freshwater lake complex on the edge of the canton of Zurich in northern Switzerland, comprising two linked basins. The site is a local recreational area known for bathing and short walks rather than a large tourist attraction.
The area around the lakes includes a staffed public lido with lawns and a small beach, paths for walking and jogging, and reed-lined shallows that support waterfowl. Facilities are concentrated on the lakeshore; the surroundings are suburban and wooded rather than mountainous.
The lakes are natural shallow basins with long-standing use for local recreation; ownership and management are municipal. The site has been developed gradually with basic visitor facilities rather than large-scale infrastructure.
The Katzensee sits northwest of central Zurich, close to the border of the city municipality and the municipality of Regensdorf. It is easily reached from Zurich by local public transport and lies in a lowland suburban setting rather than in remote countryside.
- Access: Located on the northwest edge of the city of Zurich, roughly 10-15 minutes by tram or bus from Zürich-Affoltern and Regensdorf, making it a common local day-trip spot.
- When to go: Best visited in summer for swimming; quieter early mornings and weekdays offer better birdwatching and walking conditions.
