Kata Tjuta
Mountain Sacred cluster of large rock domes (Olgas)
Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) offers dome‑shaped rock formations within Uluru‑Kata Tjuta National Park; walkers tackle Walpa Gorge and the Valley of the Winds for close‑up geology and desert panoramas.
Kata Tjuta, also known as the Olgas, is a group of large, rounded rock domes in the southern Northern Territory and a major feature of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. It is a site of cultural significance to the local Anangu people and a key natural landmark in central Australia.
The site’s principal attractions are the sweeping domes and walking routes such as the Valley of the Winds and Walpa Gorge tracks that pass between and beneath the rock formations. The domes are composed mainly of a coarse conglomerate rock that has weathered into distinctive rounded forms. Kata Tjuta comprises 36 domes and sits about 25 kilometres west of Uluru.
Anangu traditional owners have long cultural connections to the area; the national park protects both natural values and cultural sites and is managed under joint arrangements. Visitors are asked to respect cultural protocols and park guidelines when walking or photographing the domes.
Kata Tjuta is located on the central Australian desert plain within Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and is accessed from the park road network; the nearest service centres are at the park entry and Yulara.
- Geology and management: The formation comprises a cluster of large erosion-resistant domes made of conglomerate rock and is part of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which is jointly managed with Anangu traditional owners.
- Domes and proximity to Uluru: Kata Tjuta includes 36 domes located roughly 25 kilometres west of Uluru and many walking trails are seasonal due to heat; carry water and check park advisories.
What to See #
- Valley of the Winds walk: A higher-altitude walking route that loops among the domes and offers panoramic views; sections are exposed and conditions can be hot in summer.
- Walpa Gorge walk: A shorter, sheltered walk between the domes with dramatic rock walls that is suitable for most visitors and provides close-up views of the conglomerate rock.
How to Get to Kata Tjuta #
Kata Tjuta (in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park) is reached via the Lasseter Highway. From Yulara/Ayers Rock Resort drive roughly 40-50 km west on the Lasseter Highway to the Kata Tjuta turnoff and park (about a 40-45 minute drive). From Alice Springs it is a much longer drive of roughly 450 km (about 4.5-5 hours) south-west along the Stuart Highway and Lasseter Highway. Tours and shuttles also operate from Yulara; walks from the Kata Tjuta carpark lead directly to the main viewing/walking tracks (trailheads are a short walk from the carpark).
Tips for Visiting Kata Tjuta #
- Do the Valley of the Winds walk at first light - the route offers the best views and is cooler and far less crowded early, plus sections can be closed in extreme heat so an early start reduces that risk.
- Use the Kata Tjuta car park off the Lasseter Highway and head straight to the main trailheads (Valley of the Winds or Walpa Gorge) to avoid the mid-day influx of visitors doing short photo stops.
- Many visitors focus on Uluru; carve out a half-day for Kata Tjuta to fully experience the walking routes and dramatic domes - the longer walks here are where the landscape feels most remote.
Best Time to Visit Kata Tjuta #
Best visited in the dry season (April-October) for clear skies, comfortable days and reliable walking conditions.
