Karfi
Archaeological Site Archaeological Bronze Age peak sanctuary on Crete
High on eastern Crete, Karfi preserves Late Minoan ruins on a rocky ridge above the Lassithi area. Archaeological remains and panoramic mountain views draw visitors interested in Minoan settlement patterns and rugged hiking.
Karfi (also spelled Karphi) is a Late Minoan IIIC archaeological settlement on a rocky peak in eastern Crete, occupied around the end of the Bronze Age. It is interpreted as a refuge settlement with stone-built house foundations and streets.
Excavated remains include terraces, house platforms and traces of an acropolis area, arranged on steep slopes with narrow lanes and retaining walls. The site offers broad views across the surrounding valleys and toward Mirabello Bay, reflecting its defensive siting.
Karfi is important for understanding post-palatial settlement patterns on Crete and the continuity of local populations following the collapse of the palatial system. Finds from the site date it to the early first millennium BCE transition period.
The site sits on the north slopes of the Dikti mountain range above the village of Kritsa, in northeastern Crete, and is reached by local roads and short walks from nearby villages.
- Period of occupation: The site dates to the Late Bronze Age collapse and is associated with the Late Minoan IIIC period, providing evidence of mountain-top refuge settlements in eastern Crete.
