Karavasta Lagoon is a coastal lagoon in western Albania, located in Fier County and protected within the Divjakë-Karavasta National Park. It is the largest lagoon ecosystem in Albania and an important wetland for migratory and resident waterbirds.
The lagoon features extensive reedbeds, shallow waters and sandbanks that support fish, waterfowl and large waterbirds including the Dalmatian pelican. Visitor activities focus on birdwatching from hides and observation points, short boat excursions on the lagoon and visiting adjacent sand dune habitats.
The lagoon lies behind a coastal sandbar on the Albanian Adriatic coast and is reached by road from nearby coastal towns; it is managed as part of national conservation efforts to protect its wetland habitats and bird populations.

How to Get to Karavasta Lagoon #
Karavasta Lagoon lies inside the Divjakë-Karavasta National Park on Albania’s Adriatic plain near the village of Divjakë/Karavasta. By car take the main SH4 route along western Albania toward Fier/Lushnjë and follow local roads west to the park entrance; regional buses and minibuses run from Fier and Tirana to the Divjakë area. There is a small visitor/parking area and short walks from the parking/viewing points to the lagoon and birdwatching hides.
Tips for Visiting Karavasta Lagoon #
- Go at dawn or in the late afternoon for the best chance to see Dalmatian pelicans and other waterbirds when they're most active; mid-day boat-tour crowds thin out in the early morning.
- Use the park's main visitor area near Divjakë as your access point-there are marked trails and observation hides there that give good views without needing a boat.
- Avoid weekend crowds by visiting on weekdays or joining the earliest organized boat trips; birdwatching hides and the lagoon's sandbars are busiest between late morning and mid-afternoon.

Late spring to early autumn (April-June and September-October) is best for birdwatching and comfortable visits to the lagoon.
