Kapellbrücke
Building Medieval covered wooden bridge in Lucerne with paintings
Lucerne’s Kapellbrücke, a 14th‑century covered wooden bridge, contains painted panels and an adjoining octagonal Water Tower; visitors cross between the old town and photograph the historic structure.
Kapellbrücke is a covered wooden footbridge spanning the River Reuss in Lucerne, Switzerland, originally constructed in 1333 and noted for its historic roof paintings and adjacent stone tower. It is one of the oldest surviving covered wooden bridges in Europe and a city landmark.
Walking the bridge provides close views of the river and the city’s waterfront; inside the covered walkway are triangular 17th-century panel paintings that depict historical scenes and civic themes, many restored after the 1993 fire. The adjacent octagonal stone tower, historically used for municipal functions, punctuates the bridge profile and is visible from multiple city viewpoints.
The bridge links the old town with areas to the south of the river and is a focal point for tourist routes and riverside promenades; photographic opportunities are frequent at dawn and early evening when light is softer. Interpretation panels near the bridge explain its construction, the subject matter of the paintings and details of the restoration.
Constructed in the early 14th century, the bridge formed part of Lucerne’s medieval defences and civic infrastructure and later acquired the interior painted panels in the 17th century. A major fire in 1993 destroyed substantial sections of the roof and many paintings; subsequent restoration work rebuilt the structure and conserved surviving artwork.
The bridge crosses the Reuss in central Lucerne, connecting the old town to the right-bank streets and lying within easy walking distance of Lucerne’s main squares and railway station.
- Length and restoration: Originally built in 1333, the bridge is about 204 metres long and the 1993 fire destroyed a portion of the wooden roof and paintings; restoration work rebuilt damaged sections and conserved surviving panels.
What to See #
- Interior paintings and roof panels: A covered wooden walkway decorated with a series of triangular painted panels dating mainly from the 17th century, many of which were restored after a 1993 fire.
- Water tower (Wasserturm): An octagonal stone water tower adjacent to the bridge that historically served as a watchtower, prison and municipal archive and now forms a central visual anchor for the bridge complex.
How to Get to Kapellbrücke #
Kapellbrücke (the Chapel Bridge) is in the heart of Lucerne and is an easy walk from Lucerne railway station - under 5 minutes across the station plaza and riverside. The bridge is also served by local buses; if driving, follow signs to central Lucerne where parking is available at nearby car parks and the site is immediately accessible on foot.
Tips for Visiting Kapellbrücke #
- See the bridge early in the morning or after the main midday tour groups pass through to enjoy clearer views and fewer people on the covered walkway.
- Cross to the opposite riverbank and walk the quays for uninterrupted photographic perspectives; from there you can also continue into Lucerne's Old Town rather than rejoining the busiest bridge approaches.
- Take a moment under the bridge roof to look at the historic painted panels-many visitors focus on the exterior and miss the interior details.
Best Time to Visit Kapellbrücke #
See Kapellbrücke early in the morning or in the evening during spring or autumn to enjoy comfortable weather and avoid the heaviest crowds.
